Wheat prices retreat after brief rally
Feed Wheat
Defra’s grain production estimates this week indicated low wheat yields in England, with total production 17% below the 10-year average. London feed wheat (November 2025) rose to £166.55 at Tuesday’s close before easing back to end Thursday at £163.50.
This week we’ve seen forward-selling of 2026 feed wheat on Hectare Trading, achieving £184 in Northumberland & Scottish Borders with an offer range of £12, for December 2026 movement. Meanwhile, this year’s crop received £183 for March 2026 movement in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Milling Wheat
UK milling wheat premiums remain under pressure due to high import levels from Germany and Canada. Meanwhile, after ending last week at €189.25 (£164.87), Paris milling wheat (December 2025) had weakened to €187.75 (£163.56) by Thursday’s close.
Group 1 wheat achieved £187 on Hectare Trading in East Anglia, for movement next May, while Group 2 wheat received offers up to £178 for January 2026 movement in the East Midlands, with an offer range of £8.50.
The highest offers for Group 4 (soft) wheat were in Central Scotland, achieving £173 for January 2026 movement, while Group 4 (hard) wheat gained £178 in Yorkshire and the Humber, also for movement in January.
Oilseeds
One bright spot in the Defra data was a 5.5% rise in oilseed rape production in England, and a 29% increase in yields year-on-year.
Paris rapeseed (November 2025) has eased back after hitting €471.75 (£410.15) on 9 October, and settled on Thursday at €467.75 (£407.48).
On Hectare Trading, oilseed rape received offers up to £398 in Yorkshire and the Humber for May 2026 movement.
Other Crop
The 2025 English barley harvest is estimated by Defra to be 14% lower year-on-year, while oat production is down by 2.3%, with yields falling by 11%.
In Yorkshire and the Humber, feed barley gained £167 for movement next July. Meanwhile, in East Anglia, milling oats received offers up to £143 for February 2026 movement, with an offer range of £5.
