Wheat market weighed down by ample supply

Feed Wheat

Wheat continued its cautious rally this week, with some positive sentiment for Chicago wheat futures driven by speculation of Chinese interest in US crops. However, it is not clear whether the rally will be sustained on account of ample global supply still weighing on the broader market. After finishing October at £163.30, London feed wheat for November 2025 edged up to £165.95 at Thursday’s close.

Farmers have been continuing to capitalise on more favourable prices on Hectare Trading. Many have also been looking ahead to the 2026 harvest, with feed wheat, achieving £186 on Hectare Trading in Northumberland & Scottish Borders for December 2026 movement. Looking ahead with this year’s crop, we also saw offers up to £184.50 in the same region for March and £183 in the East Midlands to move next June.

Milling Wheat

Paris milling wheat has been on a gradual uptrend since the middle of October, the December 2025 contract rising to its highest level since August at €194.75 (£171.28) on Tuesday. Prices then eased back to €192.00 (£168.85) by the end of Thursday.

Group 1 wheat received offers up to £181.50 in East Anglia for January movement, with an offer range of £3.50. Also in East Anglia, Group 2 wheat achieved £170 for movement in December.

Meanwhile, group 3 wheat saw prices of £175 in the West Midlands for January 2026 and group 4 (soft) wheat achieved £178 in the East Midlands for next March. In the South West, group 4 (hard) wheat received offers up to £180 for December, with an offer range of £8.

Oilseeds

Having hit €483.75 (£426.04) as recently as 29 October, Paris rapeseed (November 2025) has fallen back slightly since, closing Thursday at €475.00 (£417.67).

On Hectare Trading, oilseed rape achieved a healthy £417 (before oil bonuses) in Northumberland & Scottish Borders for February movement.

Other crop

The UK’s small barley crop in 2025, combined with lower than average retention rates and high average nitrogen content, has limited this year’s supply of malting barley.

We saw £165.50 offered on Hectare Trading for feed barley in Northumberland & Scottish Borders for movement next March, while malting barley achieved £173 in the East Midlands for April 2026 movement.

Also in the East Midlands, milling oats achieved £143 for movement next March, with an offer range of £17, while in the West Midlands feed beans received offers up to £220 for December movement.
