Feed wheat under pressure while rapeseed prices rebound
Before we begin, the latest AHDB Harvest Report revealed that farmer-reported yields for winter wheat had improved by 6 August, now averaging 7.7 tonnes per hectare, only 1% down on the five-year average. Average winter barley yields are also 1% below the five-year average at 6.7 t/ha, while winter OSR has hit the highest average yield since 2011 at 4.0 t/ha.
The winter barley and OSR harvests are now complete across the UK, while winter wheat and oats are both 48% complete. At this stage last year, winter wheat was 37% complete while the oat harvest was 22% complete.
Judging by AHDB’s yield estimates, along with their 2025 acreage forecasts, we predict the UK’s total tonnage of wheat for harvest 2025 will be around 12.4 Mt. This would be an 11% increase on 2024, the increased supply potentially placing downward pressure on wheat prices. Likewise, the combined barley tonnage would be 7.4 Mt, a 6% rise in supply over 2024.
And now back to the grain market update…
